The Mid-Atlantic Hiking Group Pages

Welcome to The Mid-Atlantic Hiking Group!

Being a member of The Mid-Atlantic Hiking Group is a great way to make new friends while getting or staying fit, meeting that special someone (it does happen within our group), and even professional in addition to the obvious social networks! It's especially good for people who are new to the area or single and need some motivation to get out there and move it. Just get up and show up and we do all of the planning for you. Our calendar has so many events (sometimes 7 days a week thanks to our wonderful group of organizers!) that you can't ever have the excuse that you don't have the time to make it at least once a week. A few of our members attend almost daily! Whether you come every day or once every few months be sure to joins us for good times! Oh, don't forget your camera and if you take photos, PLEASE share them with the group on our site for us all to enjoy!

RSVP Rules

You only need to RSVP is you are going to attend an event. No need to RSVP "no" so please save your time because with as many events as we have that would be a real chore-grin. But, your RSVP is your commitment. We ask for RSVP's so that we may plan our hikes properly. If you RSVP "Yes," we'll be looking for you. We expect you to show up, and to be on time. If your plans change, please take the time to update your RSVP, we refund your money if you update your RSVP prior to 48 hours of a hike to encourage you to do so. Many of our hikes have waiting lists, so if you RSVP "Yes" and don't show up, you have prevented someone from attending who actually would have shown up. That's not cool. Likewise, if you RSVP "No," or don't RSVP at all, and show up anyway, it puts an unexpected burden on the leaders and is also not cool. The Organizer may very well ask you to leave.

We recognize that everyone has their own pace and we try as hard as we can to cover each persons needs. I hope you appreciate this by taking note and enjoying the huge amount of hikes we offer! While we can't customize a hike for every person, we do try to put enough variety on our calendar that there is something for everyone, and at the lowest price you will find any group requiring this amount of maintenance and attendance. Also, almost all of our hikes offer a choice of paces.

Release of Responsibility

Additional Disclaimer: During a hiking trip, everyone is responsible for themselves. The organizer is not responsible for the safety of the participants. We will try our best to prevent accidents, but are not responsible or liable if something happens to you. By joining the group, you acknowledge this.

* Never leave the group without letting the leader or sweeper know for ANY reason. This is the number ONE reason why hikers get lost when hiking with a group. Not even to go to the "bathroom". If you need to go to the bathroom while on a hike, simply let the leader or sweeper know that "nature calls" and we will provide you with the some niceties to assist you with having to go in the woods. You will be happy to know that we supply wet wipes that are biodegradable in 20 days or less, trail friendly TP, and hand sanitizer, as well as a little shovel for reasons that should be self explanatory. Not notifying a leader or sweeper that you are leaving the trail WILL result in removal from our group. A hiker from another hiking group has become lost for WEEKS, just this season, and he was only recently found (weeks later) so this is a serious matter folks! If you find it too embarrassing to let a leader or sweeper know that you have to "go to the bathroom" or whatever clever phrase you can come up with, then you either need to hold it until we reach a privy or bathroom or not go hiking with us!

* Even though we hike as a group, it is still a good idea to tell someone about your hike beforehand - when you plan to leave and return, and where you plan to explore. This way if you become lost, searchers know where to look for you. And always use the buddy system or hike in a group such as ours. Emergencies can and do happen!

Profile Pictures and other Safety Issues

* You MUST post your picture in your profile and answer the profile questions. It helps me remember the names and faces of all of our member, helps group members to remember your name, and builds a sense of community, not to mention is a VERY important safety factor. You MUST post a picture that clearly shows your face (not your dog or flowers, but you and you alone without a group of people where I cannot tell which person is in fact you). If you do not comply you will be removed from the group. Sorry but this is one area where I simply WILL NOT BUDGE! This is a matter of safety in case of a missing hiker and I need to know who to look for at the trailhead. Click here for instructions on how to post a photo to your profile.

Member Feedback

After events, please leave reviews / comments. Positive feedback helps to attract more members and is a great way to make your organizers happy. If you have a complaint, please be kind and email it directly to the organizer instead of airing it in public.

I invest a huge amount of my time in this Meetup group, for the sole purpose of making me and all participants happy and filled with positive energy. People who repeatedly fail to follow the above rules, come unprepared, or are unfriendly, in other words, if you create negative energy and problems, you risk being expelled from the group. Sorry, but it's all a give and take. Participants profit, but they also have to do their part.

Interesting Facts about our Group!

*It takes over 100 hours of combined work every week to maintain and organize our group and we are more than happy to do so. We obviously love what we do and please let our organizers know that you do too!

* We receive, on average over 600 e-mails per day regarding events, and take the time to answer every one of them personally.

* Our Leadership Team has organized and led over 1500 hikes in under four years!

* The Mid-Atlantic Hiking Group has sectioned hiked over 2500 miles on the Appalachian Trail in under three years!

* We often participate in trail maintenance days and we offer 30 days/month of unlimited free hikes to participants as a token of appreciation. We like to take care of the trails we frequent!

I hope this page is helpful to you and addresses some questions you might have. Please share any ideas and suggestion you have that would help a new member for this page by sending me an e-mail at kelliecar@aol.com!

All feedback, edits, and ideas are appreciated!

Let's have good times and see you on the trail!!!
